Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF)

The Lok Sabha Speaker recently extended greetings to CRPF soldiers, officers, and their families on the force's Foundation Day, recognizing their contribution to national security.

About CRPF

  • It is the premier central armed police force of the Union of India, entrusted with maintaining internal security.

  • It operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Government of India.

  • It is the largest of India's Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) in terms of personnel strength.

  • The force is headed by a Director General (DG) and is organizationally divided into four zones — Jammu, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Guwahati — each headed by a Special Director General.

  • Below the zonal level, the force is further organized into sectors, ranges, and battalions for operational deployment.

Historical Background

  • Originally raised as the Crown Representative's Police on 27 July 1939, in response to growing political unrest in the princely states during British rule.

  • After independence, it was renamed the Central Reserve Police Force following the enactment of the CRPF Act on 28 December 1949.

  • Since then, 27 July is observed as CRPF's Foundation/Raising Day (also called Valour Day in some contexts).

  • The force has grown from a small unit at independence to one with several hundred battalions today, reflecting its expanding security role.

Key Functions

  • Crowd and Riot Control: Personnel are specially trained to manage large public gatherings, protests, and communal disturbances.

  • Counter-Insurgency Operations: Battalions deployed in insurgency-affected regions (Left-Wing Extremism areas, Jammu & Kashmir, North-East) are equipped and trained for combat operations.

  • Critical Infrastructure Protection: A significant share of personnel guard vital central and state government installations, especially in sensitive zones.

  • Election Duty: CRPF plays a major role in providing security during parliamentary and state assembly elections across India.

  • UN Peacekeeping Missions: CRPF units have served under the UN flag in various international peacekeeping deployments, upholding India's global commitments.

  • Disaster Management: The force assists in rescue and relief operations during floods, earthquakes, cyclones, and other natural calamities.

Special Units

  • Rapid Action Force (RAF): Raised in October 1992, specially trained and equipped to handle riots, communal violence, and public disturbances with a focus on restraint and de-escalation.

  • Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA): A specialized unit trained in guerrilla and jungle warfare tactics, primarily deployed against Left-Wing Extremism.

  • Mahila Battalions: CRPF is the only paramilitary force in India with all-women battalions, reflecting its commitment to gender inclusion in security roles.

  • Parliament Duty Group: A dedicated unit responsible for security at Parliament House.

  • VIP Security Wing: Provides protective security cover to designated VIPs across the country.

Significance

  • CRPF acts as the primary force multiplier for state police in law-and-order situations that exceed local capacity.

  • Its multi-role capability — spanning counter-insurgency, disaster response, election security, and international peacekeeping — makes it one of the most versatile forces under the MHA.

Conclusion

The CRPF's journey from a colonial-era police unit to independent India's largest central armed police force mirrors the evolving internal security challenges the nation has faced over the decades. Its wide-ranging mandate — from riot control and counter-insurgency to disaster relief and UN peacekeeping — makes it a cornerstone of India's internal security architecture. The recognition extended by the Lok Sabha Speaker on its Foundation Day reflects the institutional and public appreciation for the sacrifices and service of CRPF personnel in safeguarding the nation.
